Butler was, at the time of his death, the most decorated Marine in U.
Butler later became an outspoken critic of American wars and their consequences. Butler also exposed an alleged plan to overthrow the United States government. Inhe became involved in a controversy known as the Business Plotwhen he told a congressional committee that a group of wealthy industrialists were planning a military coup to overthrow Franklin D. Rooseveltwith Butler selected to lead a march of veterans to become dictator, similar to Fascist regimes at that time.
The individuals involved all denied the existence of a plot and the media ridiculed the allegations, but a final report by a special House of Representatives Committee confirmed some of Butler's testimony. InButler wrote a book titled War Is a Racketwhere he described and criticized the workings of the United States in its foreign actions and wars, such as those in which he had been involved, including the American corporations and other imperialist motivations behind them.
After retiring from service, he became a popular advocate, speaking at meetings organized by veterans, pacifistsand church groups in the s.
Both of his parents were of entirely English ancestryall of whom had been in what is now the United States since the 17th century. Smedley's Marine Corps career successes occurred while his father held that politically influential Congressional seat controlling the Marine Corps manpower and budget. Nevertheless, Haverford awarded him his high school diploma on June 6,before the end of his final year.
His transcript stated that he completed the scientific course "with Credit". In the Spanish war fervor ofButler lied about his age to receive a direct commission as a Marine second lieutenant. The Marine Corps sent him to ManilaPhilippines. He once became drunk and was temporarily relieved of command after an unspecified incident in his room.
In Octoberhe saw his first combat action when he led Marines to take the town of Noveleta from Filipino rebels known as Insurrectos. In the initial moments of the assault his first sergeant was wounded.
Butler briefly panicked, but quickly regained his composure and led his Marines in pursuit of the fleeing enemy. One Marine had been killed and ten were wounded. Another 50 Marines had been incapacitated by the humid tropical heat. After the excitement of this combat, garrison duty again became routine. Butler had a very large Eagle, Globe, and Anchor tattoo made which started at his throat and extended to his waist. He also met Littleton Wallera fellow Marine with whom he maintained a lifelong friendship.
When Waller received command of a company in Guamhe was allowed to select five officers to take with him. He chose Butler. Once in China, Butler was initially deployed at Tientsin.Smeedly - Vague [prod. Azzamuz] (Official video)
He took part in the Battle of Tientsin on July 13,and in the subsequent Gaselee Expeditionduring which he saw the mutilated remains of Japanese soldiers. When he saw another Marine officer fall wounded, he climbed out of a trench to rescue him.Toastmasters began as a series of speaking clubs organized by Ralph C. As director of education at the YMCA, Smedley saw a need for the men in the community to learn how to speak, conduct meetings, plan programs and work on committees, and he wanted to help them.
Smedley decided to organize a club where they could learn these skills in a social environment, and the men responded well to the concept. He named the group the Toastmasters Club; "toastmaster" was a popular term that referred to a person who gave toasts at banquets and other occasions.
The first unofficial Toastmasters meeting was held on March 24, Much like Toastmasters meetings today, the participants took turns leading and speaking at each meeting.
Smedley and the older, more experienced men evaluated short speeches, while the younger men were invited to join in the evaluations.
Smedley began working at the newly organized YMCA in Santa Ana, California, inand for the first two years, his time was spent building a home for the organization. However, his passion to help others learn to speak and lead remained. Once the new YMCA building was christened in April ofhe was able to introduce the idea of Toastmasters to his colleagues, and organize the Toastmasters club that eventually became Club No. Word spread about Smedley's Toastmasters clubs and soon people in surrounding communities and other states were asking how they could start their own club.
To save time replying to the many letters and inquiries he was receiving, Smedley wrote the "Manual of Instructions" and "Ten Lessons in Public Speaking," which he had printed and bound in paper covers. On October 25,he secured copyrights on the publications and trademarked the name "Toastmasters Club. Bynearly 30 Toastmasters clubs had formed including a club in British Columbia, Canada.
To reflect expansion outside of the United States, the newly formed association was re-named Toastmasters International. Two years later, inToastmasters International was incorporated as a California non-profit organization and Smedley took on the positions of Secretary and Editor of the new association.
Through the war years, he operated the organization out of a small office. When the war ended, a new Secretary, Ted Blanding, replaced Smedley and remained active as Educational Director for the rest of his life, as well as a permanent member of the Board of Directors.
A series of rented office spaces in Southern California served as Toastmasters International's headquarters untilwhen the staff moved into the first World Headquarters building in Santa Ana, not far from the YMCA where the first Toastmasters club met.
Ralph C. Smedley died in InToastmasters International admitted its first female member, Helen Blanchard, under the name Homer Blanchard. InToastmasters began officially admitting women, and inHelen became Toastmasters' first female international president.
Terrence McCann, an Olympic wrestler, was chosen in to serve as the Executive Director of Toastmasters International, a position he held until He was replaced by Donna Groh — and then Daniel Rex to present.
